Lib Dems the Big Winners in Hertfordshire Elections

Liberal Democrats dominated the results in last week’s local elections in Hertfordshire.

The party won half of all the district council seats contested this year, plus the Watford mayoralty by a huge margin.

In total, Lib Dems scooped 44 seats across Hertfordshire, more than twice as many as the Conservatives, with 21.

In St Albans, Liberal Democrats won 19 of 22 seats and retained control of the council.

In Watford, the party won every council seat and Peter Taylor was re-elected as mayor with a majority of nearly 10,000 and 52% of the vote.

In both Stevenage and Welwyn Hatfield, the party retained all seats contested, and won 12 of 13 seats on Royston Town Council.

The results are testament to the Lib Dems’ track record in local government across Hertfordshire.

Year in, year out, we are delivering for residents: improving services, enhancing communities, strengthening local democracy, and ensuring value for money.

In terms of other parties, Labour held only 7 seats. Reform took 14, but failed to win any councillors in three of the six districts where elections took place.

The Green Party won only one seat in this round of elections, gaining none.

Cllr Steve Jarvis, Lib Dem leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said:

“Nationally, the 7th May council elections were a five-way contest with very fragmented results.

“In that context it’s remarkable that Liberal Democrats won 50% of seats in Hertfordshire.

“It shows that we are the party of unity, and the party people can trust.

“Both Labour and the Tories have a clear record of failure but in Hertfordshire residents have rejected the extremist alternatives offered by Reform and the Greens.

“It is only the Lib Dems who knuckle down, work hard, and get the job done - as voters recognised last Thursday”.
